No Sew Ruffle Tree Skirt Tutorial(ish)

Once and a while, I get a crazy idea when I see pictures of what other people have done. I think to myself, that is cute, but I wonder what would happen if I did THIS instead. Sometimes it works, a lot of the time, it does not! In this case, I like how things turned out!

There are about 500 million versions of the DIY ruffle tree skirt in blog land. About 25% of those are no sew versions. They are all adorable. It made me want one, but I wanted mine to be a tiny bit different. I chose to make my ruffles all angle towards the tree and mix tons of different fabrics to make a mish mash of awesomeness. Why does it say tutorial(ish) in the title? Because 1. Like I said, there are a bazillion tutorials out there that will tell you pretty much the same thing I will tell you and 2. I didn’t take many pictures because I did most of the work at about 1 am. That makes for crappy lighting and even crappier craptastic pictures. SOO, I will be painting a few pictures with my words.

Here is what you need…

*Boring tree skirt

*Fabric to ruffle. The 5 on the left are all fat quarters from Fat Quarter Shop. The other 5 are from JoAnn Fabric and I got 1 yard of each. I didn’t use all of the fabric, but close enough that you will probably want to get that much.

*Hot Glue (a whole lot of it)

*Glue Gun

*Scissors

Well, first you need to find the ugliest tree skirt you can find to doll up. Mine has been skirting my tree for the last 3 years. It was time to make it useful.

Then, you want to cut your fabric into strips. Mine are all about 4 inches wide. Lay them out in the order you want them to be on your tree skirt.

Lay out your tree skirt. Starting at one end where the skirt ties together, put hot glue on the tree skirt going from the outside edge towards the center of the tree skirt. Put about 6 inches at a time. Place the fabric on top of your glue and make it ruffle as you go. Keep doing this for the rest of your piece of that fabric until you reach the center. Once you get to the center, you will notice that the edge of the fabric points in into the center of the tree skirt. Cut that little edge off so that you don’t drown your tree with fabric.

Repeat those steps over and over and over and over again until you have ruffled your skirt completely.

Go attach it to your tree and you are done! What did I tell you? Lame tutorial, awesome result.
