Just Be YOU!

The saying “Just be you” was introduced to me when I went to Snap last year. It was something that I had never heard put like that. My mom would tell me to just be myself, but it never really hit me until I heard “just be you” of what that really meant.
I really struggled finding who I was growing up. I think most kids go through the same stage of “finding themselves”. I was a girlie girl, a skater chick, a punk rocker, an athlete, blah, blah, blah. The list goes on and on. I would find new friends and would kind of adjust from there. Not that I wasn’t any part of any of those things. I definitely think that each one of those phases shaped me into who I am today. I have loved watching Brassy Apple’s Refashion Your Life series that she has been doing on her blog. She is on week 6 now, so if you haven’t watched any of them, go back and watch them all.
When I learned the phrase “just be you” at Snap, they were talking about blogging. Just be you. The point that they made is that if you are just you on your blog, you won’t be a carbon copy of anyone else. I know that sometimes that can be hard to do when you are blogging because there are so many talented people coming up with great ideas in the blog world everyday. Blogging has really helped me realize who I am. I am a talented, creative, emotional, writer who now has a way to reach out to people all over the world. It is such an amazing thing to experience. Sometimes it is ugly, but the amount of good that comes out of it always makes up for the bad.
I finally feel like I have gotten to a point that my blog is 100% me. There have been times that I have put myself out there in life, just to get hurt. I think that is why sometimes it can be hard to put 100% of yourself on your blog sometimes. Yes, mean/negative comments can happen. That part of blogging is scary. BUT at the end of the day, if you can say that you/your blog is 100% you, then you can just know that you can’t please everyone.
It shocks me to hear when people say they get negative comments on their blogs. Some of them are people who have very well known blogs that have really beautiful work. To hear that someone would go on and comment just to tell them that their house is ugly, they look fat in a photo, or they don’t agree with what you said is ridiculous. Sure, there are plenty of times that I see things on blogs that I don’t love/agree with, but I would never say anything because for all I know, they are just being 100% authentic and by saying something to them, not only would bash their project/idea, but it would bash them as well.
It feels good to be to a point that I feel like my blog is totally me. How I write, is just how I talk. What I wear, is just how I dress. How I decorate, is how I really decorate. What I make is really what I make for me and my family. I don’t let anyone take away my sparkle! (haha any Bachelor fans out there?)
If you are a blogger, I really encourage you to step up and really become YOU on your blog. Yes, that means that sometimes in life not everyone will like you, but at the end of the day isn’t being yourself all you really have? For the non bloggers out there. I challenge you to just be you all of the time. Not just when you are around certain people. Just be you because being you is a beautiful thing.
